Funny if your a Math Nerd

CHUCK LORRE PRODUCTIONS, #237
There's a funny moment in tonight's episode where Sheldon gets stuck on a rock-climbing wall and remarks, "What part of an inverse tangent function approaching an asymptote don't you understand?" I thought it'd be helpful to take a moment and examine that joke. A linear asymptote is essentially a straight line to which a graphed curve moves closer and closer but does not reach. In other words, given a function y=fn(x) with asymptote A, A represents a number that, no matter how big (or, given the function, small) you make x, y will never make it to A. The particular example Sheldon quotes is the inverse Tangent function, or Arctangent, which has two asymptotes. If you graph it, it sort of looks like a horizontal S:

No matter how big you make x (that is, how far you move to the right), the function is never going to hit that top line (π/2), and no matter how small x gets (moving to the left), y is never going to be smaller than - π/2.

The more you know, the funnier it gets

Back In the Saddle

Last Saturday I went biking for the first time since leaving Idaho. I would say Mountain Biking, but there definitely was a lack of mountains, or any vertical at all. I guess I will have to call it off road trail riding down here deep in the heart of Texas. But it was great to get out and a much needed break from the hustle and bustle of work.

Two friends and I went to this park, right in the middle of San Antonio, where they had some cool trails, with some decent technical roots, stumps, and rocks.
It definitely made me miss the Boise Front, and even the little time I spent in the Pocatello hills. Hopefully I can ride Idaho again someday. Until then bring on the urban riding.

A First for Everything

The first today was Jason deciding to adopt a kitty. It has always, ALWAYS, been me that says it's time for another cat. In fact, a couple of months ago one of my gym instructors said she found a cat while out in the country on a bike ride and wondered if anyone would take it in. I told her I might, but I needed to talk to my husband. Jason said, "NO WAY!" So, we didn't get that kitten. But today I had the strangest voicemail. It's Jason and he says, "Gwen at work found a kitten out in the warehouse, so do you want to come pick it up?" WHAT?!? Sad story about Sugar....she was a great cat and the kids liked her, but I think she was sick. She always went outside in the morning when Jason left for work and would be waiting by the window in the front yard letting me know she wanted back in. One day a month or so ago she wasn't waiting by the window and I couldn't find her anywhere in the garage. I was sure she would come back because even though her old home was only a few houses down she never even left our yard, but she has never came back. Since I'm pretty sure she was really sick, I think she went somewhere to die. I'm hoping she's in a happier place now. This kitty is so sweet. I thought it was a girl at first, but now I can't decide. But I am pretty sure it's a Siamese kitten. He/she has the prettiest blue eyes I've ever seen on a cat. Eva loves her, of course. I sat her in front of the food bowl when we got home and she went crazy!! Poor kitty was probably starving from however long she was out on her own. Someone must have dumped her out there, because she is so loving and doesn't seem like she's been without home for too long. We don't know what to name him/her. Not Gerry though, :) I even gave her a bath and she didn't try to scratch me once I started. Keep looking, I had a few posts to put up.

Also a first, the first time I've heard Lilia say "kitty." I can't figure out how to play the video on here. If you click on the last picture you can see the video.

All Partied Out

It was a busy weekend my mom chose to come on! All though, all that was planned at the time of ticket reservation was Colby and Eva's combined birthday party. But Friday, we were at Seaworld all day, then we went to an adult ward party almost immediately after we got home. Then Saturday morning was a primary party in the park, and last, but certainly not least, was the birthday party Saturday night. We were supposed to have a moonbounce, but it started raining right after the primary party was over (thank goodness it didn't start raining DURING!). Even though the rain had stopped the moonbounce people didn't want to bring it over. So, quick change of plans. The kids mostly played in the play room and we had 2 pinatas instead of one. It was fun, it worked, and I'm glad it's over. After looking for a car and all these parties, I'm going to do nothing as much as I can next weekend.Eva's princess pinataThis is a friend from the gym and church. I just loved this picture, she's such a girly girl and she is seriously swinging that bat.Colby's Spiderman pinataYummy Costco cake!

I ♥ Sea World!!!

My mom came to visit on Thursday!! I love spending time with her. I have never been to Seaworld before. They have this "duh" deal going on right now. You can either pay the one day entrance fee for one day, or you can pay that same fee for a "fun pass" which you can use for the rest of the 2009 season. So.......we're going to be going back there a lot I think. We had such a blast. The kids loved it!!!I love this hat. Colby and Eva's 1st roller coaster ride
Colby's 2nd roller coaster ride, and he LOVED IT!! The picture they take during that you can see afterwards was hilarious! He wanted to go again. Do you see how steep that drop is??? Eva was sitting like this all on her own, no posing went into the making of this picture. She liked watching the flamingos.Shamu!!!

Our Sweet New Ride (kind of)

Jason didn't want to go take a picture of the van for me, so I found a similar enough picture on the web. We got an 05 Odyssey, which took forever to find because we wanted to pay under a certain amount with under a certain amount of miles, and for some reason they just aren't very plentiful down here. It's way nice.

We love our Moms!

Today is such an important day. Our moms really do deserve to be celebrated. Here is to the moms/grandmas in our lives!
(We made two versions of this video-grandma 'tello and grandma Boise, but I'm putting this one on here because Colby made up a song for Mother's Day in it.)

Deep in the Heart of Texas

A month or two ago Jason and I thought, "We should have a lower car payment..." so we put our car up for sale, not really sure if we wanted to sell it or not. We didn't hear anything for a couple of weeks, and that was okay because.....we loved our van. Then all of the sudden 3 or 4 people email us about the same time, and we ended up selling it. So we were down to 1 car, this was April 17 I think, with no 3rd row seating. Some how (and probably not entirely safely) we put all three car seats in the back row. Then we started our wild search for another van. Last weekend Leslie and Alex came to visit and ended up watching Colby and Eva ALL day because we went to Dallas to find a car. (San Antonio is a pretty big place, but for some reason we couldn't find any here.) NO LUCK!!! It was a 17 hour day and Lilia was a perfect little baby. Not fun, and Jason said, "I am NOT going to Houston." (we'd seen some vans online there too.) So I found 3 really promising vans in Houston and wanted to go look half day yesterday. Jason didn't want to-I couldn't blame him. Then he says, "There's an Astros game tonight, want to go to Houston when I'm done with my meeting at 2?"
I'd just like to thank the Astros, it's because of them we went to Houston and finally got a van. Plus the kids had a great time at the game and Jason got an awesome baseball hat.
Check out Eva's face in this one :)

I had to throw these in here. My sister-in-law Crystal did me the biggest favor ever because I was a little paranoid about going to the mall here, so she went to a sa-weeeet Gymboree sale for me. Have you ever seen more cute girls? Because I'm pretty sure I haven't!!

THANKS CRYSTAL!!
